Istanbul, Turkey

I was in the beautiful city of Istanbul for three nights in July of 2013. With a population of 13.9 million, Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, and the second largest in the world (based on population within city limits). Interestingly, part of Istanbul lies in Europe, while the other part lies in Asia (divided by a river).
This is Eminonu Yeni Cami. All of the mosques in Istanbul are beautifully lit at night. I didn't feel totally safe exploring the city at night - in fact I was aggressively approached by a large group of young guys, and headed quickly back to my hostel shortly thereafter.
A view of Suleymaniye Camii.
These ladies sell seeds to feed the pigeons. This is outside of a mosque directly beside the Spice Bazaar.

Inside the Grand Bazaar - a massive maze of interesting stores and vendors. It is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with over 61 covered streets, and over 3000 shops.
At the front of the Hagia Sophia. An absolutely beautiful building.
The Hagia Sophia was constructed as a Greek Orthodox Church in 537. Between 1453 and 1931 the building became an imperial mosque, before becoming the Museum that it is today.
While I was there the building was undergoing massive renovations/restorations.

This mosaic was incredible. In order to preserve them you aren't aloud to use flash-photography. This on in particular dates to around 1261, and is located in the upper galleries.
I believe this was in the Spice Bazaar.
A small vendor in the Spice Bazaar, the second largest bazaar in the city.
The breathtaking Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque) was constructed between 1609-1616, with the architect (Sedefkâr Mehmed Ağa) aiming for overwhelming size, majesty and splendour.

Another shot of the Blue Mosque.
Istanbul is home to a few beautiful parks, which offer an escape from the hustle and bustle of the busy city.

Taxim Square - a few blocks away from the hostel I stayed at.
