Grand Manan, New Brunswick, Canada

A small but beautiful island - Grand Manan is a perfect weekend getaway. To get there, one must take the ferry from Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick. You are able to walk onto the ferry, or take your vehicle. The trip takes about an hour-and-a-half.

An interesting barn that looks to have been converted into a house. A portion of the lower roof on the south-side of the structure has been replaced with windows in order to maximize solar gain through the winter months.
During a hike along a coastal trail, we came upon many small cottages nestled in amongst the trees. This one appears to have a steel roof and solid gutters to collect rain water. It has a wood burning stove and a solar panel to generate electricity. It is also propped off the ground by several small concrete pillars.
There are many beautiful coastal trails that run parallel to some very steep cliffs.
There were many fish traps located off the coast of the island. The fish funnel into these spiral net structures, become disoriented, and are unable to escape. Fishermen harvest the trapped fish every couple weeks/months, depending on the fish numbers. There are also a couple types of seals that tend to hang around the entrance to these traps, looking for an easy meal.
A few small fishing huts located in Black Harbour Pond. Some are still used, and some are old huts that have been abandoned for years.
Another view of the fishing huts. They are located on a thin strp of land that separates a tidal pond from the Bay of Fundy.
During our foggy coastal hike we came across many bushes that had these brilliant yellow flowers. They really stood out in contrast to the surroundings.
Kayaking. Saw a number of seals and some bald eagles which appeared to be nesting in the cliffs.
A beautiful lighthouse located at the southernmost point of Grand Manan island.
A view of a lighthouse as we left on a ferry from Blacks Harbour, headed towards Grand Manan.
Windswept trees hugged the rocky ground.
A sign pointing out how far away Saint John, as well as various other locations, are.
A small cabin built in similar fashion to the larger one displayed earlier. However this one appears to be just a bunky.
A wonderful fishing tower/lookout tower found in Black Harbour Pond click for more photos of the lookout tower
Another view during our coastal hike.
The view from my room at Castalia Marsh Retreat. I highly recommend renting one of the several beautiful eco-cabins found at this property. click to view all available eco-cabin rentals
