Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Sarajevo is the capital and largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a population of approximately 300,000.
In 1914, Sarajevo was the site of the assassination of the Archduke of Austria, which sparked World War I (After which Sarajevo became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia). Seventy years later it hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics.
After Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence from Yugoslavia, a Serbian force encircled Sarajevo and blockaded the city. For nearly four years - from 1992 to 1996 - Sarajevo suffered the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare, during the Bosnian War for independence.
Since then, Sarajevo has been undergoing rigorous post-war reconstruction - becoming the fastest growing city in the country.

The Miljacka river is one of the city's most prominent geographic features. It flows through the center of the city before eventually meeting the Bosna river.
The city is surrounded by five major mountains - all ranging in size from 1,500 - 2,100 meters.
The Eternal flame is a memorial to the military and civilian victims of the Second World war in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Located in Old Town (Stari Grad) is Baščaršija - Sarajevo's old bazaar - which is the historical and cultural center of the city.
